A Fundraiser For Pancreatic Cancer Research

in memory of Bob Hager

Riding up Cypress for Pancreatic Cancer Research

On August 18th approximately 500 cyclists of all ages and abilities will be riding in the 5th Annual Cypress Challenge up Cypress Mountain to raise money for pancreatic cancer research in memory of Vancouver businessman and philanthropist Bob Hager, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2011.

The cycling event was established by Geoffrey and Myriam Glotman in 2008 after they lost Myriam’s mother Betty Ergas to pancreatic cancer. It was only during Betty’s battle that they learnt that pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all cancers. The Canadian average for five-year survival is only 5 per cent, with nearly 600 people in B.C. expected to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year. With so few survivors to advocate and raise funds, Geoffrey and Myriam realized that an event such as the Cypress Challenge could raise important awareness and support more research.

Since then the event, hosted by the Glotman•Simpson Cycling Club, has grown significantly. Each year the event has taken the opportunity to tell the story of someone who has battled pancreatic cancer. In 2011 the event raised $125,000 in the memory of Jack Poole. This year, the event is being dedicated to the memory of Bob Hager, a prominent Vancouver businessman and philanthropist. Bob died of Pancreatic Cancer in October 2011.

100% of the proceeds from the 5th Annual Cypress Challenge go to the BC Cancer Foundations’ Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund and life-saving research at the BC Cancer Agency. Buntain Insurance continues to be a passionate sponsor of the Glotman•Simpson Cycling Club and their commitment to pancreatic cancer research.
